British PM Cameron: Understand how much our faiths have in common PDF Print E-mail

Monday 22nd November 2010: Addressing the gathering at a reception held in classic and historic surroundings at 10 Downing St, London, UK, to celebrate Eid ul Adha, UK Prime Minister Cameron called upon UK citizens to “…. try and do more to examine and understand how much our faiths all have in common, because they do have so much in common: teaching us, trying to do good works and live a good life, as well as to worship our God, and I think that is an incredibly important message.”  Mr Cameron said that “….we should be a country that celebrates and looks up to faith, rather than thinks of faith as somehow a problem or an embarrassment.”

Aa'shiq al-Rasul were called to service to provide the musical ambiance at the Eid Reception hosted by PM Cameron.   The British PM remarked that the band is “absolutely outstanding”.  Aa'shiq al-Rasul lead singer Amran said "We are humbled and grateful for the opportunity to share our faith experience with the leaders of our country, especially in this select venue, it was our honour and privilege to recite God's revelation and to sing songs Glorifying God and and praising His Messenger (saws), in such a distinguished gathering."Aa'shiq al-Rasul at No. 10 door

Amran the lead singer of the band (also a Hafiz ul Qur'an), recited a selection of verses from the Quran, the translation of which was read by Tariq,( back up vocalist).  The passages read were:

Chapter 37 (As-Saffat) verses 99 to 109

99. He, Abraham (peace be upon him) said: Surely, I am turning to my Lord, Who will guide me.
100. (And he Abraham said): My Lord! Grant me righteous and sound offspring/progeny.
101. So God gave him the good and joyful news of a forebearing, good-natured and gentle son.
102. And when his son was old enough to walk, became of age to work with him, Abraham said: O my dear son! I have been inspired (by God) to sacrifice you, so what do you think. He (Ishmael) said: O my Father! Do that which you are commanded, God willing you will find me bearing it calmly, steadfast and patient.
103. So when both Abraham and Ishmael surrendered and submitted to God's command, and Abraham lay him down on his forehead.
104. God called out to him saying, O Abraham!
105. You have indeed already fulfilled the command! Verily, that is how God reward those who do good.
106. For this was certainly an evident and manifest trial.
107. Then God redeemed Abraham with a great and tremendous sacrifice.
108. And God left for him in future generations.
109. (The Salutation) Peace be unto Abraham.

The Prime Minister followed up with a wonderful speech which clearly demonstrated that British Muslims do have a place at the British Table.

TRANSCRIPT OF SPEECH

GIVEN BY THE PRIME MINISTER, MR DAVID CAMERON

AT NUMBER 10, DOWNING STREET

ON MONDAY, 22 NOVEMBER 2010

PRIME MINISTER

Thank you very much for that, and can I say how incredibly welcome you all are.

There are really three things I want to say tonight.  The first is that I think we should be a country that celebrates and looks up to faith, rather than thinks of faith as somehow a problem or an embarrassment.  I think what Sayeeda has spoken about on this subject is absolutely brilliant, and I am glad that she has made those speeches.

I had a wonderful reminder of the importance that British Muslims attach to their faith, and the importance of faith in general, when I went to stay with a British Muslim family in Birmingham.  One of my duties was to take their very wonderful daughter and son to school in the morning, and I found out that I was taking them to King Edward’s Jewish School in Birmingham.  When I asked the parents why they were sending their children to a Jewish school, they said, ‘We are all Abrahamic faiths and we want our children to understand the importance of faith, and this is a very good school.’  I thought that was a wonderful example of the important role that faith organisations play in our society.

I think we should try and do more to examine and understand how much our faiths all have in common, because they do have so much in common: teaching us, trying to do good works and live a good life, as well as to worship our God, and I think that is an incredibly important message.  So you are very welcome here, it is great to be having this celebration and can I thank everyone who has made it possible.

The second thing I wanted to say is just to celebrate the immense contribution that British Muslims make to our national life.  There are two-and-a-half million Muslim people in Britain and – it is not a well known fact – I gather the first Mosque was established in Cardiff 150 years ago.  I am not quite sure why Cardiff was chosen but there we are!  I think it was something to do with Yemeni seamen arriving in Cardiff and wanting somewhere to worship.

Today, if you look at our armed services they are the largest non-Christian group in our armed services, and serve valiantly in Afghanistan; I have just talked to two brave British Muslims who are serving in the armed forces there.  After Christians, British Muslims are the largest religious organisation in our police force as well.  A huge amount is given by British Muslims into business life, into cultural life, and we should also remember the huge contribution that Muslim charities like Islamic Relief make to the relief of suffering around the world, as I myself have seen both at their depot in Birmingham, but also their amazing work on the ground.  I think tonight is a good opportunity to recognise the massive contribution that British Muslims make to our national life.

The third point I wanted to make – and it has been wonderful that so many people have mentioned it to me just walking from that door to standing here.  The point many people have made to me is the important role that British Muslims want to play in building a big society.

I think this is crucial, because what this is about is just asking ourselves what more can we do not just for ourselves and our families, but what we can do to build a stronger community, what we can do to take more control of our lives, what we can do to actually help solve some of the social problems we have in our country.  When you look at what British Muslims do think and take part in, I think they have – you have – an enormous role to play in that more generous and tolerant and open society that we all want to build.

So, for all those reasons, a very warm welcome.  Please enjoy the refreshments there are and listen to the band, who I think are absolutely outstanding, and I want to thank them for coming all the way from Birmingham today.  I think Eid has messages for all of us about family, about friendship and about worship; that whatever religion we belong to we can take very seriously.

I want to pay a huge credit and compliment to my friend Sayeeda, who I think has done more than any other single person to connect British politics with people in the British Muslim community.

To all of you: Eid Mubarak.  Thank you.

Making musical history... in the British Library! PDF Print E-mail

Heya

My hobbies often get me knee-deep in trouble as I end up committing to doing things that take all my available time, with no return to me, as it's usually for someone else. However, in this instance, I am proud and humbled to have seen this particular aspect of an 'involvement' come to a credible fruition - something that bears the fruit of my labours and has my name in lights for being involved - wowness.

For the last 6 months, I have been one of a team of curators (deemed local new music expert - nice!) for a British Libraries Project, that has distilled down 100 of the best New Music Artists onto one site, showcasing the diversity of West Midlands music to the rest of the nation.I couldn't say much to anyone about it because it was quite hush-hush...

The website is http://www.pilot-project.co.uk/ - it is now open for your perusal!

This site is an early step towards the setting up of the abovementioned British Library initiative on a nationwide basis - it's called 'The New Music Network'. The long term goal of the 'New Music Network' is to systematically collect and document significant new music, in all its forms, across the UK. This part of the project, that was managed by Robin Valk (Radio To Go) for the British Library, has been in development for well over two years, however my involvement has been only in the last 6 months - and for this launch phase, the West Midlands was chosen as the launchpad. This is the first time something like this has ever been done, you could say history has been made. Hence why it's called 'The Pilot Project'.

I was asked to submit 100 artists/songs that for me represented the best that the Midlands had to offer in terms of New Music - that is, self-releasing, no-label/small label music that was digitally available online. Having been an Unsigned Bands DJ on my own show - Freshly Picked on 101.8WCRfm - for the last two years, means that I have been given the Audio Privilege of showcasing 1,000s of local artists on the show. So with a hard-drive archive of over 2,000 local new music artists' tracks to go at, I had a mean and discriminate feat to suggest my chosen 100 best local bands and songs  that represented the diversity, brevity and talent the whole of the West Midlands has to offer.

Amazing new music is emerging online everyday, as musicians have both taken control of their own production and distribution processes. This is a significant cultural development in the evolution of music as we know it. Extraordinary work can emerge one day, and then disappear the next - this project's heart is in ensuring that the *best* new music is kept for posterity, with the blessings of the people who created it... a bit like a digital time-capsule - your musical creation and being kept in archive FOREVER, accessible.

The website boasts artist profiles, and selections of the their music for you to listen to. This isn't a site where you can download the music from (thus protecting the artists intellectual property), but it is a place you can go listen, read a bit about the chosen artist and then make contact via their own sites that are listed on the page. A digital online library resource if you like.

So, congratulations to Robin Valk for a successful launch night for the website (thank you for the honour of having been involved in something this amazing), also thanks to Musoplex and Framework Studios for their ongoing support and access to music and artists that have totally inspired me along the way - and most of all ALL MY LOVE & CONGRATS to the following bands I proudly nominated, that have been chosen by Robin and the team from British Libraries to make the FINAL CUT of bands to be showcased on the launch site:
