Muslims are holding a gathering which organisers hope will defuse tensions following recent demonstrations. Birmingham's Chamberlain Square is hosting an celebration of faith which extends a welcome to non-Muslims. The programme will include traditional songs and chants and a performance by Mecca2Medina, billed as Britain's first Islamic Hip Hop group. The organisers aim to celebrate the life of the Prophet Muhammad and promote understanding and respect. The event is mounted in response to last week's march in London over European newspaper cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad.
“ It's all about love, peace and tolerance of the human race ” Organiser Amran Ellahi rejected sentiments glorifying the 7 July bombings and calls for the enemies of Islam to be killed
He told BBC News: "That's not what Islam is about, so we had to raise our voice, because if we don't, these minority groups are representing us - and for sure, they're not." Mr Ellahi welcomed the inclusion of non-Muslim acts to Saturday's programme of performers in chamberlain Square. "We've worked together in the past and these are our friends. "We all support the same things - it's all about love, peace and tolerance of the human race," he said.
