Eid in the Square 2009
Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations held at popular tourist destination  By Fawad Hashmey LONDON, Sept 26 (APP)-
Live international music performances, theater, art and exhibition stalls filled iconic tourists spot-Trafalgar Square- in Central London on Saturday as members of Muslim community marked celebration of Eid ul-Fitr. London’s Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes joined thousands including foreign tourists on a bright and sunny day at the fourth annual event, which is organised by the Mayor of London in partnership with Muslim community organisations to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Highlights included live performances from a range of top Muslim acts including female nasheed artists Pearls of Islam, African musicians Gnawa who draw inspiration from Morocco, French contemporary singer Saheena, hip-hop brothers Mecca2Medina who are well known for their raps over African style drums, and Aa’shiq Al-Rasul whose lyrics are performed in English, Arabic, Urdu and Punjabi, qawali by Sajid Ahmed Khan and ensemble. Speaking to the media Barnes said: “It gives me great pleasure to enjoy an afternoon of rich, cultural entertainment at Eid in the Square. We have a strong international line up of artists and performers that I hope everyone will enjoy. It is the diversity of culture, beliefs, and individuals in London, which makes this city great and successful community led events like this are testament to the fact.” During the four and a half hours event there were poetry recitals, drumming workshops and a ceramic exhibition in the performance tent. Younger guests enjoyed an afternoon of hands on art activities in the children’s marquee.
